Your baby and you
Being your baby’s advocate.
You have found yourself in a very new and unknown environment but don’t
let this stop you from being your baby’s advocate. Ask questions, look for
answers and if you aren’t happy with what you have been told, ask for more
detail.
As soon as you are ready and wishing to understand more about what
is happening, start learning as much as you can about your baby’s medical
condition and surroundings. Ask the doctor or nurses questions as they look
after your baby so that you are aware of what is happening. It is important
that you understand the medical issues your baby faces so you can make the
best decisions possible on their behalf, in conjunction with the medical team.
Our website www.lifeslittletreasures.org.au has
lots of resources and information to empower
you to find the confidence to care for your baby
and be your baby’s advocate. Our Facebook and
Instagram pages have an amazing community
of families who have all been through a similar
journey and are willing to share and help each
other – this can be a great source of comfort and
support for you.
At first it can feel like you’re just an onlooker.
Work closely with your health care team to feel
involved in your baby’s progress, ask questions
and make plans for when baby comes home.
