Feeding your premature or sick baby
Breastfeeding
Once your baby is ready, breastfeeding is very precious and
something only a mother can do. It allows you to bond with
your baby and gives you back some control in an environment
where parents often feel lost and helpless.
It might take a while to get breastfeeding established so don’t give up as
there are many benefits for babies and parents. The lactation consultant
or your baby’s nurse can help show you ways that make for a meaningful
bonding experience for both of you, though it can also come with some
challenges. If you feel you are struggling, ask for support early. The nursery
staff are always happy to help. This is a new experience for your baby so
don’t fret if it is taking them some time to adjust. It doesn’t mean baby is
disinterested so try to persist for as long as possible.
Research shows
that encouragement
and support from
partners increases the
chances of successful
breastfeeding.
