Transitioning from NICU to SCN
Parent Story:
Ylona and Baby Evie
“
My first pregnancy was not an easy one. I was diagnosed with preeclampsia quite early in my pregnancy and spent many days in and out
of foetal monitoring. My beautiful, perfect little girl was induced at 33
weeks and 4 days, weighing a tiny 1.665kg. We were lucky, she was
doing well and breathing on her own, but she was very little and did
not have the ability to feed. She spent exactly four weeks in the Special
Care Nursery. The nurses and paediatric care was phenomenal but
leaving her every night was emotionally exhausting for both me and my
husband. It was a long four weeks but we got into a routine. I woke up
at 6:30am every day, had a shower and went in to the hospital while
my husband went to work. He would meet me there in the evening
and spend a few hours together as
a family, then we both went home
without our little girl.
When we finally took her home,
I was really overwhelmed.
The thing that helped me was having
a close friend who was going through
exactly the same thing as me (her
beautiful girls were born the day
before mine, in the same hospital,
and our girls spent a similar length of
time in hospital).
Evie is now five and she’s
still tiny, but she is also healthy, smart
and hilarious. It does get easier!
