Special Care Nursery (SCN)
Life’s Little Treasures Foundation believes that providing information
and education to parents is key to ensuring the best outcomes for
premature and sick babies and, most importantly, enabling families to
become their child’s advocate.
Being involved in your baby’s care
The love and care you can provide as parents can make a huge difference to
your baby’s health and development. Here are some simple things you can
do with your baby in hospital:
• Be with your baby as often and as long as possible but make sure to take
time out too
• Learn about what your baby likes, can tolerate, the position of their body,
arms or legs, how noise and sharp sounds affect them
• Talk or sing softly. Say hello each morning and goodbye each evening
• Hold their hand, put your hand on their back, head or bottom, feel how
they breathe
• Hold and kangaroo care as often as you can
• Learn to change nappies in a way that your baby knows it is you
• Soothe your baby and be gentle and slow as you handle them
• Read stories to your baby
• Bath your baby
• Leave something that smells like you, e.g. blanket, teddy or
developmental heart
