syringe, which is attached to the outside end of the tube. Feeding practices
differ across hospitals. Feeding times will vary depending on how big your
baby is and how well their feeds are being absorbed and tolerated. Some
babies may also receive their feeds through a pump.
It’s ideal if you can hold your baby while they have a feed. It is also
important for your baby to practice sucking at the same time they are
having a tube feed. This way, your baby learns to associate sucking with the
reward of a full tummy. This is called ‘non-nutritive sucking’. You can express
some milk so that your breast is not full and then let your baby lick and suck at
the breast while they are having a tube feed. When you feel ready, you may
be able to help tube feed your baby if you wish.
Breastfeeding
Once they are ready, breastfeeding your baby is a very
precious time and something only a mother can do. It allows a
mother to bond with her baby and gives her back control in an
environment where she can feel she has lost control.

It might take a while to get breastfeeding
established but don’t give up. There are
many benefits for babies and mums.
Breastfeeding can also help to build a
strong bond of affection with your baby. The
lactation consultant or your baby’s nurse can
help you and show you ways that make for a
positive experience for you and baby. If you
feel you are struggling, ask for support early
– the nursery staff are always happy to help.
Bare in mind this is a very new experience
for baby too – it may take a short time for
them to adjust, but never think baby is not
interested, it usually just takes time.
